Sustainability

Sustainability Strategy

Sustainability is an integral part of the journey of Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance towards more sustainable aviation and responsible aircraft maintenance.

As a major MRO player within the Air France-KLM Group, AFI KLM E&M contributes to the decarbonization of aviation by acting on the levers where maintenance activities can deliver direct, measurable impact on carbon footprint reduction and operational energy efficiency.

In a context of evolving operational and environmental challenges across the global aviation industry, our approach focuses on energy efficiency and the progressive integration of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into our industrial operations, while laying the foundations for broader engagement across our value chain.

Our ambition is to secure our decarbonization trajectory, continuously improve carbon efficiency, and support the Group’s long-term climate ambition, without compromising safety, quality, or operational performance.

Promoting the principles of the circular economy

data?.accessibility_lbl

We continue to develop programs for aircraft maintenance waste. Where possible, the principle of cradle-to-cradle is applied to bring waste back into a new production cycle with the goal of streamlining and controlling all technical waste flows. The process includes procedures to reuse and recover spare parts. Within the framework of the Reverse project at AFI KLM E&M Engines, Equipment and Services department, used equipment has five possible new destinations: re-using, dismantling and re-certification, reselling (in its current state), reconditioning as a non-aeronautical product, and treatment as waste. We aim to make circular economy and the optimization of environmental and economic performance of waste reprocessing an integral part of our business.

From ramp cars to push-back trucks, AFI KLM E&M's ground fleets are progressoiely being renewed to switch from fossil fuel vehicles that emit CO2 to all-electric ones.

Installing Solar Panels

data?.accessibility_lbl

The roofs of our hangars offer an incredible solar exposure surface. AFI KLM E&M has recently invested in Amsterdam & Norwich* in the installation of 6897 and 735 solar panels respectively, significantly reducing our external energy consumption.

Our responsibility goes beyond our own structures . On our demand, our partners are evaluated by the ECOVADIS label, the world's most trusted business sustainability ratings.

Conserving water

data?.accessibility_lbl

Cleaning engines and aircraft reduces fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions. But what is the real impact if we continue to waste water?
Thanks to our efforts, we have reduced the number of liter of water used to clean a 777 from 12.000L to 150L and we are able to recylce the used water.

Utilizing SAF

data?.accessibility_lbl

The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the most impactful measures for reducing the CO2 emissions from aviation.
Through The MRO Lab, AFI KLM E&Mis currently investigationg the impact of the use of SAF in its operational engine test cells.
